A public–private partnership between Danmarks Miljøportal and Green Power Denmark has resulted in a new solution designed to make it easier—especially for smaller network companies—to take environmental considerations into account early in the planning of, for example, cables and transformer stations.

Network companies across the country now have access to new and much-requested features in the environmental assessment tool EA-Tools.

Specifically, the launch means that network companies can not only download overlap analyses for the areas they are investigating but also obtain the results in a format that can be used directly in their own planning systems. This is valuable for grid companies that must ensure projects comply with current environmental regulations while proactively integrating environmental data into their planning work.

The purpose is to ensure that network companies can easily identify the most relevant environmental considerations in the early stages of projects and apply a holistic approach when planning future projects in combination with their own infrastructure data. For example, the new functionality allows grid companies to examine whether a cable route overlaps with protected nature areas, endangered species, or other current environmental factors as part of an overall assessment when replacing or establishing new infrastructure.

"This solution is a great example of how we can support each other in achieving a faster and more sustainable transition. With this new functionality, our members can already in the planning phase identify where environmental concerns must be addressed—and act accordingly," says Mikkel Vesterbæk, Senior Consultant at Green Power Denmark, which represents around 30 network companies in Denmark. He points out that this is particularly relevant for small and medium-sized network companies, which may not always have sufficient internal resources.

The initiative is the result of collaboration between the industry association Green Power Denmark, the joint public data partnership Danmarks Miljøportal, and a professional working group that includes network companies who specifically requested the solution.

"Data only creates value when it is used. That is why we prefer to work with those who know exactly how data can be applied in their business. Green Power Denmark does, and we see great potential in our collaboration with them. But also with others who need to make qualified decisions faster. We can save billions if the right data is brought into play across construction, management processes, and environmental assessments," says Nils Høgsted, Head of Secretariat at Danmarks Miljøportal.

A public solution for multiple industries
The project is managed by Danmarks Miljøportal in collaboration with the Expert Group for Environmental Assessments, DCEA, and Green Power Denmark. The solution connects different IT systems through environmental data and is a further development of the foundation established in 2024 by the Agency for Green Transition and Aquatic Environment and Danmarks Miljøportal.

Green Power Denmark has begun introducing the solution to its members, while other sectors—such as the construction industry—are also expected to benefit. The initiative is financed through the Danish Parliament’s Entrepreneur Package.
